When it comes to decorating for Christmas, there are few flowers more iconic than the holiday poinsettia. With its rich red leaves and star shape, this beautiful plant has become the official flower of the season. Whether you have been put in charge of decorating your office or are simply looking to create a festive environment at home – a poinsettia makes a perfect choice.
Why is it called the Christmas Flower?
Native to Mexico, the local legend of the poinsettia associates it with this special holiday. The story relates that a peasant girl wanted to present an offering to the newborn Jesus, but had no money. On her way to the nativity scene, she gathered weeds from the side of the road to have something to give Him. As her gift of pure love was placed at His feet, the weeds transformed into the beautiful poinsettia plant.
Did You Know?
The poinsettia’s true flower is actually the small clusters of yellow in the center of the plant. The red, white, or pink “petals” are leaves called “bracts”.
Over 34 million poinsettia plants will be sold this year, representing nearly 23% of all potted plants sold annually.
